The Markdown File Craze (.md) for Winning Over LLMs

The technical side of AEO/GEO optimization currently has two rising stars: WebMCP and .md files. The latter are gaining serious momentum because they’re straightforward to implement and have a visible short-term impact on visibility in AI assistants. They’re obviously not a fit for every type of site, but if you want to take your shot and grab a bigger slice of the pie, here’s how to do it:

What does it actually do?

The .md extension refers to files in Markdown format, a text formatting syntax designed to structure content and convert it easily into HTML.

This format, among others, shows up in AI training data. It’s common in technical contexts, where it’s used to synthesize content from sources like Stack Overflow or GitHub.

The good news? You can use it for your own content, which will then be converted into a format that machines parse more efficiently and more quickly.

As a bonus for LLMs, decoding a .md file costs significantly fewer tokens than full HTML, which translates into meaningful savings.

Is this right for you?

The main goal of .md is to reorganize existing content so it’s better digested and understood by AI systems, to get mentioned and cited more often. That said, it only works if your content is already solid.

This means that formatting thin or low-quality content, even with extreme structure inside a .md file, will have no noticeable impact and is a waste of time.

It’s a secondary technical optimization at the structural level, one that becomes very effective once the fundamentals are in place.

On the flip side, if you’re already dealing with crawl issues or crawl budget problems, these .md files will only add to the load.

Finally, this technique doesn’t have universal buy-in. Google’s John Mueller has called it a “stupid idea” (source), and this isn’t his first rodeo. We all remember his jabs at the llms.txt file, for instance. But many initiatives focused on AI assistant optimization, outside of what Google offers, tend to draw fire from their teams.

So this is still an experimental approach, but one that has proven its value to me time and again.

How to add Markdown versions to your pages: a how-to guide

Let’s get into the practical side: a Markdown file is defined per page. That means if you want to optimize yoursite.com/pricing-us, the .md version will be accessible at yoursite.com/pricing-us.md.

Automatic or manual setup

A few ways to get this done:

  • A plugin! If you’re on WordPress, for example, Markdown Mirror automatically generates a .md version of each page.
  • Manually upload static .md files (works fine for smaller sites).
  • Use Cloudflare’s Markdown for Agents (paid).

Creating the Markdown content

Next comes generating the Markdown from your pages, if you’re not going the automation route. Again, several options:

The “alternate” tag

Once your files are generated and live on your site, you need to tell search engines and crawlers — inside the page’s <head> — that the .md file is an alternative to the standard HTML page, using the following tag:

<link rel="alternate" type="text/markdown" href="https://www.yoursite.com/pricing.md">

And for those who believe in the llms.txt file, all that’s left is to list all your .md file URLs in it.

Note that it’s also possible to use tools like Botify to create Markdown files and serve them only to specific bots, giving you maximum control over the process.

Tracking results

All done? Now watch how AI bots behave on your pages and track your citation and mention rates over 14 days. Seeing a significant uptick in visits and conversions? That’s a win. No impact at all? Revisit your setup and give it one more shot before calling it a failure.

If you run a content-rich site with quality material that’s looking for a visibility boost on AI assistants, you’re on the right track.
